“Beware What Influences You”
Scripture:
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.’”
— Matthew 16:6 (NKJV)
Observation:
When the disciples forgot to bring bread, they misunderstood Jesus’ warning, thinking He was talking about physical food. But Jesus reminded them of the times He miraculously fed thousands — showing that He wasn’t concerned about bread. The “leaven” referred to the teachings and attitudes of the Pharisees and Sadducees — their hypocrisy, unbelief, and focus on traditions rather than truth.
Jesus wanted His disciples to be spiritually discerning and not influenced by corrupt doctrines or false teachings that could quietly spread like yeast in dough.
Application:
This passage reminds me to guard my heart and mind from wrong influences — teachings, thoughts, or worldly values that can slowly affect my faith.
It’s easy to get caught up in appearances or traditions and forget the true message of Jesus. I need to stay rooted in God’s Word and discern what aligns with His truth.
Just like leaven spreads unseen, I should be alert to what I allow to shape my beliefs and actions — whether in conversations, media, or daily choices.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that reveals truth and warns me against deception. Help me to recognize and reject anything that goes against Your teachings. Purify my heart and renew my mind so I can walk in discernment and sincerity of faith. Keep me grounded in Your truth and not swayed by the world’s lies.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
